US Open Begins Thursday at the Oakmont Country Club

US OPEN Oakmont

It’s the mid-June, that time where we say “Thank You” to our Dad’s on his special day. Thursday also marks the second major of the PGA tour season, the US Open. For a record 9th time, the Open will be held at the Oakmont Country Club, located outside of Pittsburgh.

Oakmont Country Club is not a course for the faint heart. It is going to set records for having the longest Par 5 at 667 yards, the longest par 3 at 288 yards and 3 par 4s that are longer than 500 yards. Oakmont will test the best golfers in the world on their driving accuracy, controlled irons, and also putting on the fastest greens that these professionals are going to see. Players, who are missing the fairway this week, are probably going to score bogey or more this week.

Players need to be able to be both long off the tee and have the ability to control their irons. Golfers also need to avoid three putting on Par 3s and Par 4s, will have a chance to win this week. Dustin Johnston, Jason Day, and Bubba Watson will have an advantage when coming off the tee. Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy don’t have a game that’s as “long” as the names mentioned above. That could be something that works against them. The advantage that they DO have, however, is that they can certainly control their distance with their iron from the fairway to the green. The winner of the US Open will come down to the question “who can tame Oakmont’s lightning quick greens?”

If I was a betting man, I would tab either Justin Day or Dustin Johnson as favorites. They are two golfers with both a good drive and short game. They’ve both also been playing well in the past few weeks.

It all begins this Thursday!
