2017 INTERNATIONAL BREAK
- Updated: April 4, 2017
A lot has changed since we played Mexico and Costa Rica in the Hex. Clint Dempsey was out due to a heart condition, Jurgen Klinsmann was the head coach and the USMNT were at the bottom of their group. Fast forward at where we are now and things completely different. After being cleared healthy enough to play, Dempsey was invited to the U.S training camp, by new head coach Bruce Arena, and helped the USMNT move up.
An early goal by Sebastian Lletget at the 5th min. gave the U.S a lead at Avaya Stadium, and the USMNT ended their day with 6 goals against Honduras! With Wood out, the U.S needed another striker up in the front line with Jozy Altidore and because the doctor cleared him as healthy, Dempsey was chosen to start. After 6 months of not playing soccer at all, Dempsey showed the world that he is still the man with a hat trick! They 18 years old prodigy, Pulisic, not only assisted Dempsey twice but also got his name on the scoring sheet as well. Captain Michael Bradley also scored tallying up the goal to 6. Tim Howard also came back after months out from months out due to an injury from the Mexico match and could clean sheet that day.
#Get3 was tweeted everywhere in the world. From Dwayne Wade in Chicago, Illinois to Aron Johannsson in Bremen, Germany and it felt outstanding to get 3 points that day.
#Get3More was then trending on March 28th for the match against Panama. The match was scoreless until Dempsey scored a goal assisted again by the young prodigy, Pulisic, at the 39th min. Pulisic was inside the box and was faced with 2 of Panama’s defender and was not able to find a clear path to the goal but was able to keep the ball until Dempsey was close enough so he could pass the ball to him and when Dempsey reached the ball, he did what he does best. A throw in 4 minutes later by Panama caused a cracked in the U.S’ defense and Panama was able to score an equalizing goal. Although Howard was not able to keep a clean sheet and the U.S was only able to get 1 point that night, the important thing was that the USMNT ending their international break with 4 points and moved up 4th on the table and not still dead last.
Overall lots of improvement from the last international break back in December. The U.S moved up 2 spots on the table, Dempsey is back and scoring just as much and Howard is back making key saves. It’s safe to say that the U.S are getting back into their groove with the help Pulisic, the young prodigy.
