A Real Bummer for the Union

The Union’s club-record of 4 clean sheets ended last Saturday night when Colorado was in town and now Real Salt Lake broke the team’s club-record of a 4 game winning streak with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. It was Real Salt Lake’s Joao Plata first goal of the season that helped his team end their winless ray of five of their last six matches and made an impact to Union’s actions.

After the match ended, Jim Curtin stated,
“We’ve taken pride defensively. We’ve done a really good job [since] we’ve only conceded one in our last several games so from that standpoint we’ve been good. When they do break us down and get a goal, maybe we are shocked a little bit and didn’t really recover”.

In the 37’ when Real Salt Lake was able to work as a team get the ball pass Andre Blake and the Union’s defense. Planta was able to hold possession of the ball, while in the penalty area and surrounded by 3 Union players, and make a nice pass to Jefferson Savarino, who then returned the ball right back to Plata who ran towards the goal while Andre Blake was too busy occupied by Savarino.

The match was a low scoring game that some expected because of Real Salt Lake’s goalkeeper, Nick Rimando, just became the league’s all-time record-holder in career saves and because Blake was last year’s MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Both keepers have a title to uphold and this match showed why both men are stars in their field (no pun intended).

Despite the Union conceded a goal, Blake a had great match. He made a great dive to stop Luis Silva in the 21st minute. Savarino passed the ball to Silva who as soon as the ball touched his feet, he kicked it into the right side of the net but Blake’s dive was fast enough to stop the goal. The save was so impressive even Silva smiled and laughed after it was over. Blake denied Silva another goal that night. In the 43’ Real Salt Lake make a great run towards the box and Silva made a great kick from about 20 yards from the goal but if it wasn’t for Blake’s fingertips, the ball would have gone into the back of the net.

Rimando also made an impressive save that night. With 3 minutes of stoppage time added, the Union was given a free kick in the 93’, taken by Haris Medunjanin. Medunjanin is known for his fierce free kick, that is how the Union were able to win last week, because of Medunjanin free kick. His hard shot was enough to go through Real Salt Lake’s wall yet into Rimando’s hands who punches the ball away. That was the Union’s last chance to keep their unbeaten streak alive but it all came to an end.
