What the Eagles D-line will look like without Fletcher Cox

Fletcher Cox

Last Sunday, Fletcher Cox left the Eagles’s contest with the rival New York Giants with an ankle injury. It wasn’t believed to be anything serious until this week, when teammates suggested Cox could be out up to three weeks.

Cox will not be making the trip to Los Angeles where the Eagles will be playing in a half-empty soccer stadium. With his absence, the Eagles will start Beau Allen.

However, Allen doesn’t do much in the pass-rush department (one career sack), and is mostly a run-stuffer. Jim Schwartz will likely have Allen split reps 6th-rounder Elijah Qualls, who has been active for only two games this season.

But, he’s had a very solid preseason and the Eagles are very high on him.

It’s also likely the Eagles will have Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham to slide into the middle on obvious passing situations. I would also expect that first round pick Derek Barnett will see a large increase in reps. Even though he isn’t putting up the numbers, he’s drawing double-teams off the edge and is still effecting quarterbacks.

This isn’t to say that losing Cox is not a big deal. The Eagles defense collapsed in the second half when Cox was not available; they allowed 24 4th quarter points and the Giants nearly won. Even worse, the Eagles could not sack Eli Manning.

Eagles/Chargers starts at 4:00 PM on FOX.
