Zach Ertz Injury Thrusts Celek, Burton into Bigger Roles

Philly top 10 Zach Ertz

The Eagles injury report featured a surprising name this week: tight end Zach Ertz. He is dealing with a hamstring injury and was listed as a limited participant in practice.

The Stanford product is in the top 3 in every receiving category for a tight end, and is the leader in touchdown receptions. His absence on Sunday will be a huge blow for the Eagles offense as they oppose the Denver Broncos, who boast one of the NFL’s elite defenses.

There is a silver lining: tight end is one of the deepest positions on the team. Brent Celek has been a productive player for the team since he was drafted in 2007 and Trey Burton has shown he can produce when inserted into a starting role.

Another positive: the Broncos biggest weakness is covering the tight end. Travis Kelce, Evan Engram, and Jason Witten have all broken out for big games against Denver, with the aforementioned Kelce going off for 133 yards and a touchdown this past Monday.

It’s unlikely Carson Wentz will target his receivers heavily this Sunday, especially considering Denver has the best depth in the NFL at cornerback. Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr., and Bradley Roby are all elite corners and possibly lock down Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith, and Nelson Agholor.

If the Eagles plan to have success through the air, it will have to come through their tight ends.

The Eagles face the Broncos this Sunday at 1:00 PM on CBS.
