Food Truck Friday the 13th

Food truck

This coming Friday marks a unique moment in the Philly Food scene. Ringmasters John “F’n” Cohl of the South Jersey radio show ‘2 Chicks and a Chef‘ and Gary Koppelman of ‘Industrial Food Truck‘ will hold their brainchild event “Food Truck Friday the 13th” from 6pm-midnight.

The event is family friendly (unfortunately no pets) and admission is free. The beer is being provided by The Saint Benjamin’s Brewing Company of Kensington. Most vendors on-site will have the ability to accept credit and debit cards. In addition, a portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to the local food super-bank, Philabundance.

I was fortunate enough to be able to take a few minutes of John’s time to pick his brain about what sets this food truck event apart from the others.

Where did the idea to do the event come from?

Gary Koppelman from Industrial Food Truck and I were having lunch and kicking ideas back and forth. We wanted to accomplish something in the Philadelphia food truck scene that people hadn’t seen before. I honestly can’t remember who “imagineered” what, but I did coin the name “Food truck Friday the 13th”. Gary has been in the Philly food truck game since the jump, so I knew his involvement equaled a guaranteed win.

What makes this Food Truck event different than the others that we might normally see?

#FoodtruckFridayThe13th will be the Philadelphia area’s first indoor/outdoor food truck festival.

The serving trucks participating are all members of the Industrial Food Truck commissary, and, therefore, exempt from crippling vendor/event fees. Being affordable was always something we flagged as a priority for the event so this allowed us to keep the admission at the low cost of … nothing!

Can attendees expect any debut truck/vendor appearances?

Although my hope was that this would be the launch of my new coffee company, that will have to wait until this Fall. However, the Hawker food truck will be making it’s large event debut! Definitely make it a point to check out their ‘Bao burger’!

Is there any entertainment lined up?

Local Bob Marley tribute band Jah People will be there to keep the vibes of everyone there positive!

Along with yourself, ‘Cheesesteak King’ Tony Luke is the co-MC of the event. How did he get involved?

Tony Luke has been friends with Gary and I (independently of each other) for years. More recently, Tony has been my mentor in the food and radio industries. It was a no-brainer to ask him to co-host the event with me.

Simultaneously, Tony recently lost his son to a heroin overdose. This afforded me the opportunity to give Tony another stage to spotlight his social media movement #BrownAndWhite

#BrownAndWhite is an initiative aimed at heightening the awareness of removing the social stigmas associated with use of heroin opioid addiction. It’s something that’s not designed to be a charity, but a platform to launch open conversations between survivors and the general public.

If you’re in the area, come out this Friday and experience all the amazing food from some of Philly’s Finest Food Trucks!

Directions to Industrial Food Truck are embedded below. It’s easily accessible through any public transportation. For those driving, on-site parking is available next door.

See you all there!
