Vegan Friendly Beyond Meats Making a Mark on Ballpark Menus

Ballpark food is typically not associated with the vegan lifestyle. That mentality, however, seems to be quickly changing thanks in large part to Beyond Meat, the plant-based protein company backed by Bill Gates and Tyson Foods Inc. This new generation of vegan meat substitutes promise to mimic the taste of real ground beef, right down to the blood and grill-produced sizzle.

At Yankee Stadium in New York, the restaurant chain Bareburger has become the first to offer the newest pork-less option from Beyond, the ‘Beyond Sausage.’

Fans can order the Beyond Sausage Original Bratwurst Link, which is topped with pickled jalapeños, caramelized onions, and is served on a pretzel bun.

The sausages are said to look, taste, feel, and smell exactly like their pork-based counterparts. Beetroot is what gives it a ‘meaty’ color, coconut oil creates ‘juiciness,’ and a plant-based algae casing replicates the signature snap of a traditional pork sausage.

The Yankees minor league affiliate, the Trenton Thunder, has also moved to provide a meatless option on its stadium menu: the Beyond Burger. Served at the healthy food stand, the burger made it’s debut this season over the first two Thunder home stands.

Vegan Nacho Grande at Globe Life Park in Arlington

Moving to the south, having started on opening day this season at Globe Life Field in Arlington, vegan fans can treat themselves to the Vegan Nacho Grande. The nachos consist of tortilla chips smothered with house-made vegan chili, vegan cheese sauce, lettuce, tomato, olives, and Beyond Meat Crumbles.

Sales at Beyond doubled last year as it expanded its line into thousands of grocery stores, including Safeway, Kroger and Target.

Now it seems that from Vegan Cauliflower Cheesesteaks at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia to the Impossible Burger at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., vegans can now enjoy plant-based versions of ballpark staples.
